Volunteer Opportunities Overview

BOOK FAIR:  Assist in the student purchase of Scholastic books.  There are usually three shifts.  This is a two- to three-day event which occurs once a year.

·        Time commitment:  approximately 2 hours per shift

CONFERENCE NIGHTS:  This is one way you can volunteer in the evening at BJH.  On conference night we set up tables at both entrances and have volunteers greeting and handing out fliers.  This is a great way to meet other BJH parents!  Conferences occur three times a year.

·        Time commitment:  2 ½ hours per shift.

CONFERENCE POTLUCKS:  The first conference night of each session we have a potluck dinner for the staff.  Since school gets out at 2:40 and conferences start at 3:20, and run late into the evening, our staff does not get much time to have dinner.  So, our fantastic BJH parents generously contribute towards a dinner for them with their food or monetary donations.

·        Time commitment:  none

DANCES:  Even though your students might say that they don’t want their mom or dad at a school dance, please reconsider.  Your task at the dance can take you away from the dance floor and put you more “behind the scenes.” You might be taking tickets, working coat check or concessions, or patrolling bathrooms and halls.

·        Time commitment:  4 hours

FABRIC CUTTING:  At-home project cutting fabrics for FACS (Family and Consumer Sciences) classes.  Often done during the summer.

·        Time commitment:  varies, usually 1-2 hours each request

FUNDRAISERS:  For our annual magazine drive, help check orders as they are received and distribute orders after they come in.  Occasionally departments do independent fundraisers as well, and need similar assistance.

·        Time commitment:  2-3 hours per shift

HONOR ROLL LISTS:  At-home project assembling the honor roll lists that are displayed in the school.

·        Time commitment:  twice a year, approx. 1-2 hours each time

LUNCHROOM SELLING:  We take the opportunity of being able to contact all our students during the lunch hour so that they may purchase certain items available to them.  This includes purchases like yearbooks, carnations, and dance tickets.  This task is always done during the lunch hour, 11:00-12:45.

·        Time commitment:  2 hours per shift

MEDIA CENTER :  Assist the media department with a variety of tasks including shelving books.  We work around your availability.  This can be a weekly commitment, or once or twice a month.

·        Time commitment:  approx. 1-2 hours per shift (very flexible!)

PICTURE DAY:  Assist students on picture day, making sure the students are in the appropriate line and have their money.  This always occurs in September, usually the third week of school.

·        Time commitment:  approx. 2 ½ hours per shift

RIF (READING IS FUNDAMENTAL):  Assist students selecting their free book once each trimester.  There are three shifts each day.

·        Time commitment:  three times a year, approx. 2 hours each shift
