Introducing Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) at Brooklyn Junior High

Have you heard about “SSR” from your BJH student? 

ü      SSR stands for Silent Sustained Reading and is 30 minutes set aside on Wednesday mornings when students, teachers, and other building staff are reading books, magazines, newspapers, or other reading materials of their choice. 

Why is BJH implementing a Silent Sustained Reading (SSR) program?

ü      Research shows that the more print materials surround children and the more students are reading self-selected materials, the better readers they will become.  We hope to improve our student’s reading, spelling, and vocabulary skills during this reading time.

How can you help support this new reading initiative at BJH? 

ü      Encourage and model reading with your children at home.

ü      As students prepare for school on Wednesdays, remind them to bring reading materials.

ü      Make regular visits to your local public library with your child.  Librarians are often great resources for reading suggestions!
