Three student athletes from Osseo Area Schools will be honored at the 42nd Annual Minneapolis Athena Awards luncheon on May 1. One outstanding female athlete is selected from each of approximately 50 greater Minneapolis area private and public high schools to represent her respective school at the awards ceremony.
This year, District 279’s award winners are Sarah Bezdicek, from Osseo Senior High; Sydney Smith, from Maple Grove Senior High; and Hannah Schaub from Park Center Senior High.
SARAH BEZDICEK — OSSEO
Senior Sarah Bezdicek is a member of the Osseo Senior High Nordic Skiing team. She won the Region 5AA Section title this year, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the second-place skier. She went on to win the state title by more than 90 seconds. Sarah is also a member of Osseo Senior High’s track and cross-country teams. Sarah is a member of the Osseo Student Ambassadors, a three-year academic letter winner while taking rigorous advanced placement and HP courses. She will finish her academic career with a cumulative grade point average of 4.0.
SYDNEY SMITH — MAPLE GROVE
Crimson softball player Sydney Smith will attend Louisiana State University with a full scholarship to play softball. She served as team captain for two years and appeared in three state tournaments, with the team earning state runner-up in 2012 and 2014. Athletic recognitions include: 2014 Gatorade player of the Year in Minnesota; 2014 Star Tribune Player of the Year; three-time NWSC All Conference Player; two-time First Team All-State and multiple team awards.
HANNAH SCHAUB — PARK CENTER
Hannah Schaub has earned five letters in soccer, five letters in basketball and two letters in softball at Park Center Senior High. She has been recognized for All Conference honors in both soccer and basketball and Honorable Mention in softball. She was a member of the soccer team that took third place in the state tournament this fall and was a member of both State Championship basketball teams last winter, 2013-14 and this winter, 2014-15. Hannah has accepted an athletic scholarship to play basketball at Valparaiso in the fall of 2015.
