FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE

Family & Consumer Science

 

FACS 7 – 1 Trimester     required

Students will learn about food choices, food preparation and nutrition, in addition to kitchen safety and sanitation.  Students will be introduced to concepts of consumer awareness, child care and development and will have the opportunity to do career exploration activities. Students will also learn the steps in the decision- making process in order to make wise choices throughout their lifetime.

 

FACS 8 – 1 Trimester      elective

Students will be introduced to concepts of financial literacy and consumer economics and will learn ways in which to manage their personal time. This class will also provide students the opportunity to investigate careers and create an on-line portfolio through Minnesota Career Information System that they may continue to use throughout high school. In addition, students will learn the design process (investigate, plan, create, evaluate) through interior design, “green” designs and other design projects.

 

FACS ELECTIVES – NINTH GRADE

Creative Foods - 1 Trimester

Learn how to prepare delicious and healthy foods such as pasta, breads, fruits, vegetables, meats and desserts! Discover, sample, and prepare foods from other countries. Students will prepare various recipes using small kitchen appliances such as woks, blenders, crepe makers, bread machines, food processors and more! This class lays the foundation of interest and skill development for careers in the food service industry.

 

Designs for Life – 1 Trimester

Do you want to be the next great designer? Expand your imagination by creating an original product!  Students will examine market needs and design or redesign and evaluate products intended to meet consumer demand.

Course fulfills an MN Academic Standard in the Arts.

 

Family Today – 1 Trimester

Explore positive relationships that will be developed throughout the life span: infants, toddlers, preschoolers, school age, and teens to grandparents. This is a beginning class leading to other high school FACS courses in which eligible students are able to receive articulated college credit.

 

Freshman Seminar – 1 Trimester

Navigate your future by making clear and creative plans for high school and beyond!  This life skills and futures planning course is designed to help you do more self-discovery by creating a personal inventory of your unique set of interests, aptitudes and skills, values and personality and learning styles. Become informed on how your personal inventory relates to the requirements of many, exciting, future career opportunities and important postsecondary education and training options that may best match your personal life choices and career goals.  Freshman Seminar will help students chart a course for high school and research and plan for postsecondary options using a variety of resources including computer software programs, online/web resources and other assessment tools, as well as to obtain information provided by guest speakers.
