WELCOME . . . .

… to the vocal music program at BJH!!!!  We are ready for a fun, exciting and enriching year of music, and we hope that you are too!!! This handbook describes vocal opportunities and policies for this year.

We  are looking forward to an exciting, rewarding year of music at BJH!  Parents/Guardians, thank you for your continued support.  I hope you find that the information presented in this handbook is clear and informative.

GOALS OF THE BJH MUSIC PROGRAM

·        to develop performance skills

·        to increase musical knowledge

·        to improve musical understanding

·        to provide new musical experiences

Each vocal student has chosen to take choir.  In return for this opportunity, it is his or her responsibility to put forth 100% effort.  Each musician has an important part to contribute to our success.

 The 7th Grade Choir

The 7th Grade choir is a single gender choir.  This choir meets every other day. The choir performs two concerts a year.

 The 8th Grade Choir

The  8th Grade choir is a mixed choir.  This choir meets 5 days a week. The choir performs three concerts a year.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS:        PERFORM!!!!!

1.     Arrive to class on time.  Tardies will result in a lowered participation grade.

2.     Be in your assigned chair with your folder, music in order and a pencil.

3.     Be quiet during announcements.

4.     Be quiet when the director is working, even if it is with another section.

5.  Maintain good posture.

6.   NO GUM, CANDY, FOOD OR POP in the classroom.

7.   Trips to the bathroom and drinking fountain are restricted.  Passes are limited to 4 per trimester. Please go before class.

8.    Put your folder in your assigned slot following each rehearsal.

9.    At the end of the hour, the class will be dismissed when everyone is in his or her assigned seat and all folders are put away.

10.  Be courteous to your fellow students as well as your teacher.

11.   Respect school property and the property of others.

12.   Learn your music.  We are as strong as the weakest link.

Folders and Music

Every singer will have a choir folder to use.  This folder will be provided by the school and kept in the classroom.  Folders and MUSIC are the responsibility of the singers to whom they are assigned.

LATE WORK

No late work will be accepted.

GRADING POLICY

The vocal music grading policy is a point system.  Each trimester a student has the opportunity to earn points for participation, daily work and concerts.

Participation means not only being in class but also listening, taking an active role in class, following classroom procedures and completing assignments.

Daily work may include singing, sight singing, music history, music theory and various writing assignments.

Concerts are a culmination of months of hard work and effort by all of the students in the choir.  We rely on 100% participation at each concert to best present our music to the audience.  Choir is both an individual and team sport.

EXTRA CREDIT

Extra Credit will be given to a student who attends or performs in a concert outside of their performing group. A program from the concert must be turned in along with a paper indicating your impressions, what you liked least and what you liked best. A maximum of 50 points per trimester can be earned through extra credit.

CONCERT POLICY

Concerts are a culmination of months of hard work and effort by all of the students in the choir.  We rely on 100% participation at each concert to best present our music to the audience.  Choir is both an individual and team sport.

Concert schedules are distributed the first week of school in the student handbook and are also included in this packet.  We ask all parents and students to mark all concert dates on their calendars and to make every effort to avoid conflicts as they make other plans.

Concert attendance is worth 200 points.  If you are not able to attend a concert due to illness or family emergency, a parent must call and notify the director prior to the concert.  The student may make up the concert points by arranging a time (before or after school) with the director to sing all of the performance pieces. The student will sing along with the video tape of the concert and be tape recorded.  This must be done within 2 weeks of the concert.

If a concert is missed with no advance warning, it will be considered a lack of commitment. The student will not be able to make up the performance.

CONCERT DRESS

Students must dress appropriately for a concert performance.
